Rep. Ron Wright 1st Sitting Congressman To Die From COVID

U.S. Congressman Ron Wright has died from COVID-19 -- the first such sitting member of Congress to succumb to the lethal virus since the pandemic began.
The Texas Representative's staff made the announcement Monday, saying he'd passed Sunday while hospitalized in Dallas -- with his wife, Susan, by his side in her own bed ... as she too had been admitted after they both came down with COVID in January.
At the time his diagnosis was announced, on Jan. 21, Wright said in a statement that he was experiencing minor symptoms ... but more or less felt fine and was determined to keep working on behalf of his district. Clearly, his health took a toll for the worst.
His staff also notes ... he'd been battling and getting treatment for cancer in recent years.
He'd been serving in Congress since 2019, and was in his second term at the time of his hospitalization. A lifelong Republican, Wright had been involved in local politics down in Tarrant County, TX -- which covers a majority of the Fort Worth area. He served as an at-large member on Arlington's City Council, and at one point filled in as mayor pro tempore.
While Wright is the first active member of Congress to have died from coronavirus, another incoming congressman from Louisiana, Representative-elect Luke Letlow, died from COVID in December before being able to be sworn in and serve with his freshman class.
Wright was 67.

Super Bowl Tampa Bars, Restaurants Packed to the Gills ... Dare You to Find a Mask
-
Breaking News

It's pretty amazing ... the actual Super Bowl will be COVID safe with rigid rules, while the City itself has gone in the total opposite direction, and all the proof you need is right on video.
Thousands of partiers crammed into the Ybor City and SoHo Districts in Tampa Saturday night and it couldn't be more unsafe ... almost no one is wearing a mask, and sardines have more room to stretch than these folks.
The crowd is a mix of college students from the area and lots of others who flew down to Tampa for some fun.
The City and the NFL have encouraged people to wear masks and socially distance, but it wasn't happening. You see police cars in the area but we didn't see any cop or other official trying to make things safe. Probably wouldn't have done any good regardless.
The WTR Tampa Pool inside the Godfrey Waterfront Hotel was poppin' all weekend, with Steve Aoki performing Friday night and Diplo and 50 Cent taking the stage Saturday ... again, with COVID precautions non-existent.
The wild card ... are any of the partiers going to the Super Bowl? If they catch the 'rona before the game ...

Diplo Headlines Super Bowl Super-Spreader Party

Diplo can sure draw a crowd, because around 2,000 people swarmed the Godfrey Waterfront Hotel's WTR Tampa Pool Saturday night and -- aside from the whole COVID super-spreader thing that sometimes causes death -- a good time was had by all.
It looks very pre-pandemic, with music, a dance floor, bars, and fun shenanigans. And, as per usual, no social distancing and masks are few and far between.
The electronic music and light show are pretty spectacular, as fire dancers do their thing.
On a serious note, this is what is keeping Dr. Fauci and other experts up at night. Some of them have warned ... if there are 50 people in a crowd, there's more than a 50% chance at least one of them is carrying COVID.
With the variants spreading across the U.S. -- some of which are even more contagious than the COVID OG -- this and other events like it are disasters waiting to happen.

50 Cent also performed earlier in the evening at the same venue.
Here's what the event organizers demanded ... "Social distancing procedures will be strictly enforced, face masks will be required for all staff & guests, wellness and temperature checks will be mandatory for entrance, sanitizing stations will be placed throughout the venue, and continued cleaning protocols will provide regular sanitizing.” The best-laid plans ...
The Tampa PD was pissed ...“Scenes from WTR last night and a few other clubs were incredibly disappointing. The city spent the better part of a year educating residents on precautions due to the pandemic and have recently put a mask order in place for both the entertainment and event zones to ensure the safety of our residents and visitors to our great city.”
The night before, Steve Aoki headlined another bash at the same venue -- that was also super COVID unsafe.
Florida has 1,771,359 COVID cases with 27,599 deaths.

'RHONY' Cast P.O.'d Over Ramona's Reckless COVID Behavior
-

The 'Real Housewives of New York' are set to resume production next week, but not everyone's happy. Our sources say some of the cast members are pissed at Ramona Singer over her reckless behavior, traveling maskless all over the world.
Production sources tell TMZ ... some cast members are livid after seeing Ramona hitting up St. Barts and parts of Florida while production was on hiatus. Making matters worse ... we're told the cast's fuming over the fact she threw caution to the wind and visited these places without practicing COVID guidelines ... like wearing a face mask.
Production has been shut down for nearly a month after a 'Housewife' and several crew members tested positive for COVID. We're told frustration mounted when Ramona was seen galavanting at tropical spots over the last few weeks ... even after the cast was specifically asked to stay in NY.
For what it's worth ... a source close to Ramona -- who in the past had been dragged over her quarantine behavior -- tells us the network was well aware she had been traveling. Our sources say Ramona will take a COVID test before she resumes filming.
And, speaking of filming ... we're told the cast will film in and around Manhattan early next week and in a couple of weeks head to Ramona's Southhampton, NY pad to film what was originally supposed to be a cast trip to upstate NY.
We reached out to Ramona but she declined to comment through a rep.

50 Cent Hosts Wild Super Bowl Party
50 Cent hosted a wild Super Bowl party Friday night ... and although you see masks here and there, for the most part, it was COVID-oblivious.
The bash went down at a private airport hanger in St. Petersburg. The drill was for everyone to mask up and, with limited capacity, there was room for social distancing. Well, that was the plan.
Doors opened at 9 PM with tickets ranging from $85 for general admission to $7k for a stage table ... judging from the crowd there was enough disposable income to fill the joint.
Tampa's own DJ Fresh performed as well and everyone was very clearly up for a wild and good time.
The party barreled on way past midnight, and more is in store tonight, when 50's set to perform again.
As we reported, health officials, from Dr. Fauci on down, have begged people not to have the typical Super Bowl parties both before the event and on game day. The reality ... people are hosting these parties all across the U.S. of A. ... and judging from recent history the state that will lead the pack is Florida.

Steve Aoki Crazy Super Bowl Concert ... Pandemic, What Pandemic???
Steve Aoki partied like it was 2019 Friday night, because there was absolutely no evidence of a pandemic.
The famed DJ headlined at WTR Tampa Pool inside the Godfrey Waterfront Hotel, in front of a massive, mostly maskless crowd ... you see a few masks, but that's about it. As for social distancing ... haha.
Steve broke open bottles of bubbly and sprayed the crowd, zeroing in on a few folks who got special attention and a giant gulp of champagne.
The show lasted for hours ... from midnight to 3 AM Saturday in the rollup to the Super Bowl.
There's lots more in store. Migos will play a day party Saturday followed by concerts by Diplo and 50 Cent later in the evening.
The event producers tried keeping everything COVID safe with various demands ... "Social distancing procedures will be strictly enforced, face masks will be required for all staff & guests, wellness and temperature checks will be mandatory for entrance, sanitizing stations will be placed throughout the venue, and continued cleaning protocols will provide regular sanitizing.”
Tory Lanez had a big bash Thursday night at the same venue ... again, it was packed to the gills with almost no masks in sight, and forget social distancing.
For what it's worth ... Dr. Fauci urged everyone to cancel Super Bowl LV parties ... worrying they'd become super-spreader events. Apparently, message not received.

Jamaica Running Low on Marijuana ... No Weed, No Cry???
Jamaica's experiencing another unfortunate effect of both climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic ... there's a severe weed shortage.
It's mostly affecting the Caribbean nation's illegal market, which is reeling after last year's hurricane season wrecked marijuana fields and the ensuing drought made it even worse.
On top of all that ... a strict 6 PM curfew, put in place because of the coronavirus, prevented farmers from taking care of the crops at night, which is vital to production.
And, while supply is low, consumption and demand have remained high because ... well, there's a pandemic, and this is Jamaica.
The good news -- for those who can afford it -- the Jamaican government claims there's no shortage in the country's regulated industry ... but legal weed prices are apparently 5 to 10 times higher than on the street.

NFL Commish Roger Goodell To Joe Biden ... Use Our Stadiums As COVID Vaccine Sites

Awesome gesture from Roger Goodell and the NFL ... the Commish is opening up all of the league's stadiums and urging Joe Biden to use them as COVID vaccine sites.
Goodell made the offer in a letter to POTUS on Thursday ... saying he and the league want to do everything they can to end the pandemic and promote vaccinations.
In the letter to Biden, Goodell said 7 NFL stadiums are currently being used as mass vaccination sites ... but he insisted all of the league's other facilities are more than ready to take on the task as well.
"We can expand our efforts to stadiums across the nation more effectively because many of our clubs have offered their facilities previously as COVID testing centers as well as election sites over the past several months," Goodell said.
"We look forward to further discussion with your administration as well as your partners in state and local governments to advance this effort."
The offer to the President comes just a few days after the NFL announced it's giving away 7,500 free tickets to this weekend's Super Bowl to vaccinated health care workers.
Huge props to the NFL for the moves.

LeBron James Rips NBA's Proposed All-Star Game Plans ... 'Slap In The Face'

1:44 PM PT -- 2/5 -- Kenny Smith tells TMZ Sports he understand why guys like LeBron and Fox are so upset about the planned game ... but he's urging players to give things a chance before completely shutting it all out.
"A lot could happen in a month," the "NBA on TNT" star says. "I remember when guys were saying they didn't want to go to the bubble. And, they went to the bubble. They were like, I'll be there, but I don't really want to be there."
"And, then all a sudden, the bubble was a huge success."
Smith seemed confident the NBA's health and safety protocols would keep players away from the virus ... adding, "They figured it out in the bubble, they'll figure it out [at the All-Star Game]."
6:02 AM PT -- If ya thought Fox was pissed over the NBA's last-minute plans for a pandemic All-Star Game -- wait 'til you hear LeBron James' take on the matter ...
The L.A. Lakers superstar went absolutely IN on the league for its ASG plans ... saying straight-up the proposed game feels like a "slap in the face" to him.
"I have zero energy and zero excitement about an All-Star Game this year," James said. "I don't even understand why we're having an All-Star Game. But, it's the agreement the Players Association and the league came about."
LeBron says he and his Lakers were led to believe that after such a short offseason, they would get nearly a full week off for the All-Star break.
"They throw an All-Star Game on us like this and it just breaks that all the way up," LeBron said. "Pretty much kind of a slap in the face."
LeBron continued, saying the added risk of players catching COVID makes the proposed game even more nonsensical.
"We're going to bring the whole league into one city that's open," LeBron said, before adding, "Obviously you guys can see I'm not very happy about it."
"But, it's out of my hands. I'll be there if I'm selected. I'll be there physically, but not mentally."
Want to see LeBron James, Kawhi Leonard and Nikola Jokic take on Kevin Durant, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Joel Embiid next month??
Apparently, De'Aaron Fox doesn't ... 'cause the Sacramento Kings star ripped the NBA on Wednesday for reportedly trying to put together an All-Star Game this season in the middle of a pandemic.
"If I'm going to be brutally honest," Fox said, "I think it's stupid."
"If we have to wear a mask and do all of this for a regular game, then what's the point of bringing the All-Star Game back?"
The NBA, according to ESPN, is trying to lock in an agreement with the Players Association to hold the annual classic on March 7 in Atlanta.
If safe, it seems like a great idea -- the NBA routinely has the most entertaining All-Star Game of any of the four major sports.
But, Fox -- who has a shot at being selected this year -- clearly would rather not see it ... given all the risks of COVID involved.

"Obviously, money makes the world go round," Fox said. "So, it is what it is."
Fox, though, did say he'd play in the All-Star Game if selected ... but with a smile, he noted, "If you're supposed to be in it, and you're not hurt and you decide not to play, that's a hefty fine."
"So, hell yeah I would play in it."

SoulCycle's Stacey Griffith Cutting Vaccine Line Could Lead to Criminal Charges
-
Exclusive

The SoulCycle instructor who described herself as an "educator" in order to get the COVID-19 vaccine may have committed a crime ... but we've learned it's unlikely she'll be charged.
Stacey Griffith's looking at a possible perjury charge -- or a charge of offering a false instrument for filing -- if it's shown she knowingly submitted a false statement on the vaccine eligibility form ... this according to the New York State Dept. of Health.
Both charges are misdemeanors, and if convicted ... she'd face up to 1 year in prison and a fine of up to $1,000.
A law enforcement source connected to the matter tells TMZ ... it would be rare for prosecutors to charge someone with a crime under these circumstances.
Our source says Griffith could easily make the case she thought she legitimately qualified for the vaccine. In other words, she is a teacher ... and although her conduct clearly violates the spirit of the rules ... it probably falls short of criminality.
Waiting for your permission to load the Instagram Media.
As we reported ... Griffith caught flak after sharing a since-deleted photo of herself getting the first dose of the Moderna vaccine, while most school teachers have still not been vaccinated in NY.
She apologized afterward, claiming to have made a "terrible error in judgment."
As for whether Griffith's still eligible to receive her second shot ... the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene refused to comment.

Tory Lanez Pre-Super Bowl Bash ... Looks More Like a Super Spreader!!!
Dr. Anthony Fauci's urging to "lay low" for Super Bowl weekend didn't get to Tory Lanez or a few hundred others partying hard in Tampa ... with zero distancing or masks.
The rapper held a pre-Super Bowl soiree Thursday night at WTR Pool in Tampa where fans packed in and swarmed around the stage where Tory was performing -- loudly singing along to his hits.
What pandemic, right?
Now, Tory's event isn't the only game in town when it comes to crowded parties -- and everyone knows Florida's been wide open for months. Even though it was held outdoors ... health officials have insisted for some time now that even while outdoors, social distancing and face coverings are essential.
It's interesting though ... promotions for the bash noted, "Social distancing and mask guidelines will be strictly enforced as per city guidelines."
As we reported, Dr. Fauci urged Americans earlier this week to cancel Super Bowl LV parties ... fearing nationwide super-spreading events.
He had said, "The one thing you don't want to do, you don't want to be somebody that's putting a damper on anything, but you don't want parties with people that you haven't had much contact with."

Super Bowl LV COVID Inspires New Prop Bets ... Which Coach Removes Mask First?!?
-
Exclusive
COVID is now affecting the Super Bowl gambling world -- with sportsbooks taking real action on which teams and coaches will break coronavirus protocol first.
... seriously.
With Tampa Bay Bucs coach Bruce Arians and Chiefs honcho Andy Reid both experiencing some mask issues during the NFL season ... the folks at BetOnline.ag believe it's a certainty one of the coaches will drop their face covers on Sunday.
But, whose nose will get exposed first?
The odds favor Arians ... ya gotta bet $250 to win $100. Reid is the underdog, which is probably a good thing for him. A $100 bet on Andy pays $170 if he shows his nose first.
If wagering on COVID ain't your thing ... there's plenty more action.
-- Will Gisele appear on the Super Bowl game broadcast more than 1.5 times?
-- Will the announcers mention President Trump during the broadcast?
-- Which will be mentioned first during the broadcast -- Patrick Mahomes is getting married or Patrick Mahomes is becoming a father?
-- There are also odds on what color jacket The Weeknd will be wearing when he is first seen on the broadcast. Red is a heavy betting favorite ... followed by Black and then White. Blue and Purple are 7-to-1 long shots.
-- What's more: Tackles + Assists for Jason Pierre Paul or fingers on the right hand of Jason Pierre Paul (he's the guy who lost some of his fingers in a fireworks accident a few years back).
-- What's more: Total points scored in the Super Bowl or Senate votes to convict Donald Trump?
You can also bet on the color of Gatorade dumped on the winning coach -- orange is the favorite followed by red, lime green, blue, clear ... and again, purple is the long shot.
Remember, there's no such thing as a sure thing -- so have fun, but be smart!!

Sean Penn Berates Anonymous Whistleblowers ... Who Blasted Vaccine Effort
Sean Penn's going full Sean Penn on a pair of anonymous whistleblowers who say they're part of his nonprofit helping in L.A.'s vaccination drive ... and are getting worked to the bone.
The Oscar-winner reportedly sent a 2,200-word internal letter to his CORE employees this week -- which was leaked to the L.A. Times -- and in it he unloads on them for remarks in the comments section of a recent NYT article about Penn/CORE's efforts at Dodger Stadium.
Penn reportedly went in on the 2 alleged CORE staffers who claim the work conditions at the stadium are exhausting, and possibly illegal ... as they allege they're barely getting breaks and grinding through near 24-hour shifts.
The Times says he referred to their comments as "shameful entries" and "obscene critiques." That was the kindest part, because Penn added ... "And to whoever authored these, understand that in every cell of my body is a vitriol for the way your actions reflect so harmfully upon your brothers and sisters in arms. I have taken counsel and here will refrain from using the words with which I would otherwise choose to describe the character of your actions."
Penn might have censored his language, but you can tell there's a Tom Cruise-esque rant simmering inside of him.
He did acknowledge some CORE workers might have been working longer hours lately, saying these are unprecedented times that call for extra manpower... and it was his call.
He also added this for any of his employees who are "predisposed" to complaining or "whining" ... "It’s called quitting. Quit for CORE. Quit for your colleagues who won’t quit. Quit for your fellow human beings who deeply recognize that this is a moment in time. A moment of service that we must all embody sometimes to the point of collapse."
And, that was, by his own admission, a restrained Sean Penn.

Dr. Fauci Cancel Your Super Bowl Parties! ... 'Lay Low And Cool It'
-
Breaking News
Watching Patrick Mahomes vs. Tom Brady WITHOUT a party could help save lives ... so says Dr. Anthony Fauci, who's urging people to "lay low and cool it" for this year's Super Bowl.
The infectious disease expert appeared on "Good Morning America" on Wednesday and pled with the nation to cancel SB LV parties ... fearing big gatherings for the big game could lead to the spread of coronavirus.
"The one thing you don't want to do, you don't want to be somebody that's putting a damper on anything," Fauci said, "but you don't want parties with people that you haven't had much contact with."
"You just don't know if they're infected."
Instead, Fauci suggested watching the game at home by yourself or with your housemates.
"Enjoy it," Fauci said. "Have a party in your house with your family with the people who were there."
Fauci's plea comes just days after the CDC also recommended the cancelation of large Super Bowl parties.
In their guidelines for safe Super Bowl watching, CDC officials said, "Gathering virtually or with the people you live with is the safest way to celebrate the Super Bowl this year."
"If you do have a small gathering with people who don’t live with you, outdoors is safer than indoors. This year, choose a safer way to enjoy the game."
Kickoff for the Bucs vs. Chiefs matchup is 3:30 p.m. PT on Sunday. Please mask up and be safe!

Australian Open Tune-up Matches Canceled Over COVID Case ... Players Quarantining
-

Bad news Down Under ... a worker associated with the Australian Open has tested positive for COVID and now ALL of the players (including Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka) have been ordered to isolate.
AO officials made the announcement Wednesday ... explaining an employee at one of the Australian Open quarantine hotels came down with the virus this week.
And, because of the case, they've now canceled Thursday's Australian Open tune-up games ... and have said players and AO workers who were at the hotel must now go back into quarantine.
"Those associated with the AO who quarantined at the hotel now need to be tested and isolate until they receive a negative test result," officials said.
"We will work with everyone involved to facilitate testing as quickly as possible. There will be no matches at Melbourne Park on Thursday."
Of course, Australia's COVID rules required everyone who flew in from out of the country to isolate for 14 days AND test negative before they could go out in public.
The rule had seemed to work beautifully ... Australian officials had just announced they hadn't had a positive case in the entire country in nearly 2 full weeks.
In fact, things were going so swimmingly, maskless fans packed an arena last week to watch some Serena Williams, Naomi Osaka and Novak Djokovic warm-up games.
Now, however, the AO's Feb. 8 start time could be in jeopardy due to the new case ... although officials said there's no change on that front as of this moment.
"An update on the schedule for Friday will be announced later today," AO officials said.

MLB's Andrelton Simmons I Opted Out of 2020 Season to Get Help ... Suicidal Thoughts Caused By COVID Pandemic
-

Andrelton Simmons -- one of the best shortstops in baseball -- says he opted out of the end of the 2020 season to deal with a crippling depression caused by the COVID pandemic ... revealing it got so bad, he was having suicidal thoughts.
"It was tough for me mentally to where the thought of suicide crossed my mind," Simmons said in a text message interview Tuesday with the Orange County Register.
"I was really saddened by how much I was hearing about the death toll and seeing how smaller businesses were going out of business, and I was a little depressed at how the effects of all the new rules and fears were gonna affect people's livelihoods and how disconnected people were becoming," Simmons said.
The 31-year-old Gold Glove winner was still playing for the L.A. Angels when he opted out in Sept. 2020 -- missing the final 5 games of the season. He has since signed a new contract with the Minnesota Twins.
But, in his interview with the OC Register, Simmons says, "The idea of finishing the [2020] season in a bubble was too much for me to handle."
Simmons also reveals he's dealt with suicidal thoughts in the past and made it a priority to seek professional help as soon as possible.

Fortunately, Simmons began seeing a therapist who helped him "let go of those thoughts."
Now, he's encouraging anyone else who's battling mental health issues to follow his lead.
"I know there’s the fear of seeking help/assistance because of the perception of people thinking there’s something wrong with you," Simmons said, "but I think in reality there are way more people than you might think that are going through stressful stuff."
Simmons continued, "You’re not alone. You don’t have to keep everything bottled up. Find someone that can help you express your emotions freely and that can assist you with it.”
